UF/IFAS Extension Orange County provides education and information to residents and businesses through workshops, publications, and mass media in the areas of family life, youth development, natural resources, horticulture, and agriculture. Current April classes/events are listed below and on its events calendar.

Fundamental of Palms: Principles, Problems, and Potential (In Person)

Join Orange County Extension Agents Dr. Heather Kalaman and Hannah Wooten to learn more about the fundamentals of palms. In this 3-hour workshop, we will dive into a general overview of palms, including historical significance, biology, morphology, stressors and how to best care for palms in the landscape. CEUs available! 

Take Control of Your Money for Renters (Online)

Money management, renters’ rights, eviction prevention, and more! Offered via Zoom by a team of UF/IFAS Extension Agents, including Orange County Extension Agent Jenny Rodriguez, this class is for residents looking for income-based assistance programs or anyone wanting to become a more savvy renter.

The Science of Cheesemaking (In Person)

Don't miss this opportunity to indulge in the world of cheesemaking and take home your own creations! Join Orange County Extension Agent Hillary Ayers for a fun and interactive cheesemaking event and discover the secrets of creating your own safe and delicious cheese from scratch. This in-person event is perfect for everyone interested in the art of cheesemaking. Learn quick and easy techniques and get hands-on experience in crafting your very own cheese.

 Summer Vegetable Gardening (In Person)

Learn the basics of gardening during Florida’s hottest season and receive heat-tolerant seeds to start the season off right! Presented by Orange County Extension Agent Calvin Gardner, this in-person class will cover what plant species work well in hot weather, how to plant each species, and how to harvest. Participants will receive seeds to help jumpstart their summer garden.

 Bat House Building Workshop (Online)

Urban Backyard Chicken Class (Online)
Keeping chickens and producing your own eggs in suburban and urban settings has become a popular hobby! Hens in a coop can be a fun and practical addition to your home garden. gARTening Series: Creating Your Open Terrarium Paradise (In Person)

Learn about what this miniature ecosystem entails and how to design/care for this miniature landscape that you will take home! In this class presented by Orange County Extension Agent Clarissa Chairez, you will make your own “unique” terrarium and learn about its care and maintenance.

Adopt-A-Tree (In Person) 

Join our UF/IFAS Extension Master Gardener Volunteers at Downey Park, located at 10107 Flowers Ave, Orlando, FL 32825, for our Adopt-A-Tree event! Open to all Orange County residents with proof of residency such as a driver’s license, utility bill, or photo I.D. Each household is eligible to receive two trees, and the trees may be planted on the resident’s private property only. Trees are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and varieties will vary based on availability, but all will be suitable to flourish in Zone 10A.  
Saturday, May 18, 2023, 8:00am-12:00pm or until trees are gone, whichever comes first.  No pre-registration or fee to participate. 407-254-9200.

Water Bath Canning: Jams and Jellies (In Person)

Presented by Orange County Extension Agent Hillary Ayers, this hands-on canning experience will provide research-based recommendations for safe, home canning practices, including equipment and tools, food safety tips, and all of the steps needed to safely preserve food at home. Plus participants will make a delicious jam recipe that they will get to take home!

Blooms and Beyond: A Guided Garden Tour (In Person) 

Grab your gardening hat, sunglasses, and some comfy shoes, and join Orange County Extension Agent Dr. Heather Kalaman for a guided tour through our Exploration Gardens! See unique plants in our 12 themed gardens and learn about Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles, smart irrigation, vegetable gardening, and flower species to attract bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects. The tour includes an FFL book and pollinator seed packets.

Orange County Master Gardener Volunteer Informational Meeting (In Person)

Join us for an informational meeting to learn how to become an Orange County Master Gardener Volunteer! Do you have a love for gardening and giving back to your community? The Master Gardener Volunteer Program is an outreach program composed of UF/IFAS Extension certified volunteers who are trained to provide research-based horticultural education to Florida residents. This class is an opportunity to meet the Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator, Clarissa Chairez, and ask program-related questions.
