Seminole County Sheriff’s Office to hold Memorial Service Today

Governor Rick Scott to join Sheriff, family members in honoring the fallen

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) invites members of the community to the Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony honoring SCSO deputies who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The ceremony will take place at 5:30 PM today at the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, located at 100 Bush Blvd, in Sanford.

The ceremony will include remarks by Sheriff Don Eslinger and Florida Governor Rick Scott. Family members and descendants of the six fallen officers will participate in a rose ceremony at the memorial monument. The event will also include a three-volley salute and flyover.

SCSO has lost six deputies in the line of duty:

  • 1922 - Deputy Cleveland Jacobs was shot while trying to arrest a man for theft.
  • 1975 - Deputy Robert Moore died as he saved inmates from a fire in the jail.
  • 1977 - Deputy George Pfeil was mortally wounded when he interrupted an armed robbery at a pharmacy.
  • 1989 - Deputy Hugh Thomas lost his life in 1989 when he was shot responding to a prowler call.
  • 1998 - Deputy Eugene Gregory made the ultimate sacrifice in 1998 after being assaulted by a mentally ill person.
  • 2011 - Deputy Matt Miller lost his life in a traffic accident when another vehicle pulled in front of his motorcycle, fatally injuring him.

In the event of inclement weather the ceremony will be held in the Board Room at the Seminole County Public Schools Educational Support Center located at 400 E. Lake Mary Blvd. in Sanford.
