Playoff Week: 7-3 Wekiva peaking at the right time

Posted

Mustangs Travel to 7-4 Winter Park for post season matchup

The Wekiva Mustangs sat at a mediocre 2-2 after four weeks of the high school football regular season. Not the way a team wants to start if they have playoff goals on their to-do list. But in week five, the Mustangs hit their stride, winning five of their last six games; their only loss a 38-31 nail biter against crosstown rival 167552903_displayApopka. However Wekiva rebounded from that district loss, beat Ocoee 21-7 and West Orange 49-20 to claim second place in 8A District 4 and secure a playoff berth Friday night against the Winter Park Wildcats.

The Mustangs have peaked at the right moment, winning their last three games to close the regular season, and facing the Wildcats - a team they beat soundly (35-7), to start their midseason surge.

On offense, the Mustangs are led by three talented seniors - quarterback Trey McGee, running back Jaylon Fair, and wideout Wesley Touze. McGee threw for 1,021 yards and 6 touchdowns. Fair is twekiva_logohe workhorse of this offense, running for 1,014 yards and 13 touchdowns. Against Winter Park, Fair ran for 114 and four touchdowns. He finished the season with four straight games over 100 yards. Touze is McGee's favorite target with 561 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns.

When the Wildcats have the ball, they are led by junior quarterback Cameron LeGree, who is a threat to both run or pass. LeGree threw for 829 yards and 9 touchdown passes this season, but also ran for 736 yards and 5 touchdowns. Senior Jordan Pouncey is also a dual threat, to both run or catch passes. Pouncey rushed for 581 yards and 8 touchdowns, while also gaining 319 receiving yards. Andre Williams is also able to both run and receive, with 177 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground and 396 receiving yards and 5 touchdown grabs.

Tim Shiflett is the head coach of Winter Park in his eighth season and has a 56-27 record.

Kickoff is at 7PM on the Winter Park High School campus. The winner of this game plays the winner of the Apopka - Timber Creek matchup on November 18th in round two.
