Alonzo Williams Park is getting a facelift, and for the residents that live nearby it can’t happen soon enough.
It’s a long time coming,” said Pastor Richard King of the St. James AME Church last night at the City Council meeting. “I’m glad to be around to see this.”
An architect with the engineering firm CH2M contracted by the City of Apopka presented plans Wednesday to the Apopka City Council for rebuilding the Alonzo Williams Park Community Center. The new facility will feature community space, reading and media rooms, a kitchen and bathrooms measuring 4600-4800 interior square feet with an additional 1500 square feet of outside patio space.
Apopka is applying for a $750,000 federal grant to help pay for the project.
“This is a step in the right direction,” said Apopka resident Francina Boykin. “It’s a very good thing to do. The right thing to do.”
The park is located on the corner of Hawthorne Avenue and MA Board Street. Currently the 3-acre facility has a multi-purpose field for soccer or football, outdoor basketball courts, a softball field, a neighborhood community center and a playground.
The park was named after Alonzo Williams Jr., the first black Apopka city councilman, elected in 1971.
A representative from CH2M will return to the January 6th meeting with the revised/final plans for final approval.
Councilman Billie Dean was also pleased with the improvements.
“I think it’s a good project,” he said when asked by Mayor Joe Kilsheimer.
