OCPS is adding a second attendance call

Parents and guardians will receive a morning and afternoon alert if their child is absent from school

Posted
As a parent, there is nothing more important than the safety and well-being of your child. And when it comes to their education, it's essential to ensure that they attend school regularly.

However, sometimes things can go wrong, and your child may be absent from school without your knowledge. This is where an additional attendance call in the morning can be crucial.

Traditionally, schools call parents when their child is absent from school. However, these calls are made later in the day, usually after attendance has already been taken. This means that parents may not be aware of their child's absence until much later, which can be concerning and cause unnecessary worry.

By implementing an additional attendance call in the morning, parents will be informed about their child's absence at the beginning of the school day. This allows parents to take prompt action and investigate why their child is absent. It also ensures that parents are aware of their child's whereabouts and can take appropriate steps to ensure their safety.

Orange County Public Schools agrees with this assessment and is changing its policy. OCPS released the following statement about the attendance call:

"Beginning this week, parents and guardians will receive an additional attendance call in the morning when their child is absent at the beginning of the school day. High school calls will begin at 8:55 a.m., elementary school calls will begin at 10:05 a.m., and middle school calls will begin at 11:05 a.m.

This notification will not replace the early evening attendance call you are familiar with. If your child is absent more than 50% of the day, you will receive the evening attendance call.

If you have not done so, we encourage you to opt-in to receive text messages so that you will receive these attendance notifications via text message, voice, and email. Please text “Yes” or “Y” to 68453 to opt-in to attendance notifications via text.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your child’s school. #ocps."
