Hydroponics and Cooking Under Pressure highlight UF/IFAS Classes for December

UF/IFAS Extension Orange County provides education and information to residents and businesses through workshops, publications, and mass media in the areas of family life, youth development, natural resources, horticulture, and agriculture. Current December classes/events are listed below and on its events calendar.

Set it and Forget it Hydroponics (In Person) 

Come learn how to grow your own hydroponic lettuce in a non-circulating system! All you have to do is set it and forget it! Join Orange County Extension Agent Hannah Wooten to learn about the basic principles of hydroponic growing! You will practice these simple techniques by building your own hydroponic bucket, and you will leave the class with a working hydroponic system, including 3 lettuce seedlings actively growing. The class will include materials for you to grow a few more cycles of your own hydroponic lettuce, including seeds, nutrients, and some other important materials so that you can grow your own!

Take Control of Your Money for Renters (Online)

Money management, renters’ rights, eviction prevention, and more! Offered via Zoom by a team of UF/IFAS Extension Agents, including Orange County Extension Agent Jenny Rodriguez, this class is for residents looking for income-based assistance programs or anyone wanting to become a more savvy renter.

Cooking Under Pressure (Online)

During this virtual class presented by Orange County Extension Agent Hillary Ayers, you will learn tips, tricks, and how to cook meals using your pressure cooker and it includes a LIVE cooking demo! Participants will receive the recipe ahead of time can in case you want to cook along with Hillary!

Guided Garden Tour (In person)

Grab your gardening hat, sunglasses, and some comfy shoes and join our Orange County Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Agent Dr. Heather Kalaman for a guided tour through our Exploration Gardens! See unique plants in our 12 themed gardens and learn about Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles, smart irrigation, vegetable gardening, and flower species to attract bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects. The tour includes educational materials and pollinator seed packets. Kids 12 and under are free and encouraged to join!

Green Industries Best Management Practices (GI-BMP) SPANISH (In Person)

A science-based educational program for lawn-care and landscape maintenance workers. Prerequisite for the Urban Fertilizer License. Hosted by Orange County Extension Agent Hannah Wooten, this class offered in SPANISH covers proper fertilization, pest control, irrigation, and cultural practices for landscape and pest control professionals.

Urban Backyard Chicken Class (Online)
Keeping chickens and producing your own eggs in suburban and urban settings has become a popular hobby! Hens in a coop can be a fun and practical addition to your home garden. Learn how to get started and be successful in this program presented via TEAMS by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough.

Water Bath Canning: Jams and Jellies (In Person)
Presented by Orange County Extension Agent Hillary Ayers, this hand-on class will teach participants the ins and out of water bath canning while making a winter themed, cranberry-cider jelly! Attendees will take home a jar - perfect as a gift or for your holiday tables!
