How to Get Help if You Are a Veteran

Posted

As a veteran, you have served your country with honor and dignity. Even though that is the case, it can be difficult to find the resources you need when you need them most. From legal wrangling over disabilities to finding general support, it is important to understand what you are entitled to receive as a veteran of this country.

Receive your entitlements

Serving on active duty, in the reserves, as a guard member, or in any other military capacity can and sometimes does lead to a disability. The disability can run the gamut from partial or complete loss of hearing to the loss of a limb. Any disability can be life-altering and debilitating. It can affect how you do your job and whether you can even hold a steady job.

If you have a disability that resulted from your military service, you need to contact a qualified veterans disability lawyer to help you get the benefits you deserve. They will walk you through the process from start to finish and guide you on how to go about achieving your disability status.

VA home loan

Veterans looking to buy a home have a valuable tool in the form of a VA Home Loan. It is a financially advantageous option for funding your home purchase when compared to other loan options available as you will generally receive a better interest rate and terms than with the competition.

Before signing your VA Home Loan paperwork, it is important to fully understand all of the fine print. Do not pass this opportunity because you have fallen prey to the myths surrounding the VA Home Loan. Talk with your lender, your realtor, and your installation resource center to educate yourself on what to expect.

Find a support group

Being in the military is one thing. Deploying to a war zone is an entirely different matter. What you may have experienced there is something that your non-military friends and family “back home” may not understand. To that end, it is imperative for your current and continued mental health that you find a support group with other veterans.

These individuals will understand what you have been through “down range.” They will listen without judgment when you share your experiences and empathize with your feelings. You can do the same for them and offer reciprocal support with people who have been there.

Reach out

Sometimes the best way to get what you need is to simply ask for it. That can be so hard, of course, but it may be the best thing for you. No matter what you are wondering about or needing assistance with handling, speaking the words out loud will matter.

Tell a friend what you are looking for. Mention your stressors at a support group. Ask your medical provider for help or a referral. Sometimes you look like you have everything together on the outside. In reality, everyone needs help at some point in their lives. Others may not know or understand what you need, so ask for it if you are able to.

You have served your country well. Now you deserve to receive the services that you have worked so hard to earn. Find the businesses, services, and support groups that will have your back when you need help.
