Habitat announces a new Apopka homeowner in the new year

Hard work of OCPS employee and high school son culminates in Apopka home

Finding affordable housing can be daunting for many families in Seminole County and Apopka. But thanks to the work of the Apopka-Seminole Habitat for Humanity, this search has become a little easier.

The non-profit organization has worked tirelessly in the area to provide affordable housing to those in need. With the help of dedicated volunteers and local businesses, Habitat for Humanity has been able to change the lives of many families in Seminole-Apopka.

And now, in 2024, they are ready to celebrate a new homeowner!

On January 3rd, from 1-2 pm, Habitat is having a home dedication and ribbon-cutting for the  Riley family of Apopka at 123 Short Street in Apopka.

LaTonya is an Apopka native who can’t believe she’s about to become a homeowner. She is a bus monitor for Orange County Public Schools, a proud mom of three adults, an Apopka High School son, a grandmom of four, a cancer survivor, and a hard worker. She absolutely loves her job.

Off work in the summer, she finished her sweat equity in record time, with her son’s help, even while not in the best of health. What a turnaround from the time her own mother died. She was diagnosed with cancer and had to quit her 18-year job. She made up her mind to change her attitude, focus on her credit score, take the Habitat Financial Academy, and apply to buy an affordable home. For this doer, the rest is history!

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Habitat for Humanity, more and more families are able to experience the joy and security that comes with homeownership.
