Diversitastic! Unique dining experience coming to Apopka

Posted

Fusion Fest is dedicated to celebrating the people and the many different cultures that make Central Florida awesome by showcasing talents, sharing stories, driving innovation, and building community based on respect and understanding.

Every week/month, it organizes both virtual and in-person events that keep the community engaged and connected to the cultural diversity in Central Florida. It participates in parades and creates dining experiences and workshops from January to November.

And this month, FusionFest is coming to Apopka!

On Tuesday, August 23rd at 7 pm, FusionFest will host a Ukrainian-focused Diversitastic! Dining experience. It will include real-life stories by Orlando Sentinel columnist Greg Dawson, who will tell the story of his mother's escape from the Nazi invasion of Ukraine in the 1940s, and Kateryna Montieva, who will tell of her own escape from the Russian invasion in 2022.

The program, along with a full meal including varenyky (similar to pierogi), cabbage rolls, borscht, chicken rolls with mushrooms, a potato side dish, and a Ukrainian dessert are included in the ticket price along with music, visual displays of Ukrainian arts and crafts, and explanations of Ukrainian icons that will be revealed. Although the Diversitastic! Dining experiences are usually held in a restaurant. The August event will be held at the St. Mary Protectress Ukrainian Catholic Church, 245 Lake McCoy Drive, Apopka.

"We felt, in light of current events, that it was important to get to know more about Ukrainian culture this year. We could not find a Ukrainian restaurant in Central Florida, so the ladies of St. Mary Protectress Church stepped up to serve us a wonderful Ukrainian meal," said Monica Long Tamborello, FusionFest's dining curator.

Tickets for the two-hour Diversitastic! Dining Experience is available at www.FusionFest.org/dining.
