Bring your peanut butter jars to UF/IFAS classes in October

UF/IFAS Extension Orange County provides education and information to residents and businesses through workshops, publications, and mass media in the areas of family life, youth development, natural resources, horticulture, and agriculture. Current September classes/events are listed below and on its events calendar.

Peanut Butter Challenge (Food Drive)

This is UF/IFAS Extension’s annual jar collection to help local food pantries feed families in need. Accepting donations of unopened jars of peanut butter Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm, until October 31st at 6021 S. Conway Rd.

4-H Poinsettia Sale (Fundraiser)

The Orange County 4-H Program is pre-selling red, white and pink poinsettias in various sizes as well as a beautiful poinsettia/mum bowl ready the first week of December. Every plant sold generates funds for Orange County 4-H to provide scholarships for youth to attend camps, leadership events, and contests that support positive youth development. Poinsettias may also be ordered for donation to local senior centers for holiday cheer.

Pre-sale October 2 through November 6, 2023. Suggested donations range from $7.50-$18.00.

Fall Vegetable Gardening Webinar (Online)

Learn how to create a Florida vegetable garden that grows what you want to eat and produces throughout the Fall season! Presented by Orange County Extension Agent, Calvin Gardner this class covers the science of how to grow better, healthier plants and ways that you can grow more garden vegetables with less work. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or just getting started, this class will help you on your way to a beautiful and bountiful fall garden.

Take Control of Your Money for Renters (Online)

Money management, renters’ rights, eviction prevention, and more! Offered via Zoom by a team of UF/IFAS Extension Agents, including Orange County Extension Agent Jenny Rodriguez, this class is for residents looking for income-based assistance programs or anyone wanting to become a more savvy renter.

Ornamental & Turf Review (Online)

This is a two-hour online review session to prepare you for the FDACS Ornamental and Turf (O/T) pesticide licensing exam, presented by Orange County Extension Agent Hannah Wooten. Continuing education units (CEUs) are also available for attendance for individuals that have already obtained their pesticide applicator license.

First Time Homebuyer Workshop – ENGLISH 10/12 & 10/19 (Online)

Learn the steps to home ownership and how to obtain an affordable mortgage in this 2-part class offered via Zoom in ENGLISH by a team of UF/IFAS Extension Agents, including Orange County Extension Agent Jenny Rodriguez. The homebuyer workshop meets the education requirements for down payment assistance programs.

Backyard Chicken Class (Online)

Keeping chickens and producing your own eggs in suburban and urban settings has become a popular hobby! Hens in a coop can be a fun and practical addition to your home garden. Learn how to get started and be successful in this program presented via TEAMS by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough.

Adopt-A-Tree (In Person) 

Join our UF/IFAS Extension Master Gardener Volunteers at Dr. Phillips Park, located at 8249 Buenavista Woods Blvd, Orlando, for our Adopt-A-Tree event! Open to all Orange County residents with proof of residency such as a driver’s license, utility bill, or photo I.D. Each household is eligible to receive two 

trees, and the trees may be planted on resident’s private property only. Trees are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and varieties will vary based on availability, but all will be suitable to flourish in Zone 9B.  
Saturday, October 21, 2023, 8:00am-12:00pm or until trees are gone, whichever comes first.  No pre-registration or fee to participate. 407-254-9200.

Beekeeping 101 – Is Beekeeping for Me? (Online)

Come learn if beekeeping is for you! In this very beginner class presented via Zoom by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough, you'll learn about the important agricultural role honey bees play, how much it costs to get started, and the legality of keeping bees in your area. After this class, check out our Beekeeping 201 class!
