Apopka Fire Department welcomes 14 new firefighters to its ranks

Posted
Before a capacity crowd at City Hall, the Apopka Fire Department welcomed 14 new firefighters/EMTs to its ranks at a swearing-in ceremony that included friends, family, members of the AFD, Mayor Bryan Nelson, Fire Chief Sean Wylam, Commissioners Kyle Becker and Diane Velazquez, and Micheal Duran, the father of deceased Firefighter Austin Duran, who in many ways triggered the hiring spree.

"In the last eight months of advocating for a more trained and safer fire department, our efforts have paid off," said Duran in a Facebook post. "What started with a letter my son wrote, that we found after he passed and an open conversation with a firefighter, we were able to fight for a new way of protecting our fine men and women of the AFD. The chamber of city hall was filled with lots of new recruits and newly appointed white shirts, Chiefs, all due to a special firefighter, Austin Duran. There is still much work to be done, but we are on the right path to a better way of doing things. A new and improved version of the Apopka Fire Department. Congratulations on our new staff positions. Congratulations to the AFD and to the city of Apopka."

Commissioner Diane Velazquez, who was one of the driving forces behind hiring additional firefighters, was pleased with the turnout.

"Yesterday (Friday, March 23rd), I attended the graduation of the newly 14 Sworn Apopka Firefighters ceremony held at City Hall," Velazquez said in a Facebook post. "The Chamber was filled (standing room) of families & friends and Senior Staff Firefighters to support and to Congratulate the new Firefighters joining the Apopka Fire Department."

Commissioner Nick Nesta, who also drove the discussion during the budget process, was also excited the AFD was moving forward.

I am ecstatic to be a part of this huge change within our city," Nesta said. "Welcome to the family new firefighters!"

Becker, who pushed for additional firefighters on fire apparatus in previous budgets, was also impressed with the AFD Class of 2023.

"It makes me so proud to see a new class of firefighter/paramedics joining our city," Becker said in a Facebook post. "They will serve in honor of FF Austin Duran’s legacy. We prayed over them for their safety, and they took an oath to do the same for our residents. Thank you…"

For Apopka Professional Firefighters Association President Alex Klepper, it was a look into the AFD's future.

"We are extremely happy to see these 14 new firefighters be sworn in," Klepper said. "This is a historic moment for the Apopka Fire Department finally taking a step forward and making sure we are on the proper path toward staffing our fire trucks to best serve our growing community and our firefighters. We find ourselves on uncommon ground where these firefighters need only to lend us their commitment to leaving things better than they were found and the existing infrastructure and employees needing to rebuild an entirely new culture and environment around them, as they are the future."

The City Council, at its final budget hearing in 2022, approved 12 additional firefighters in its 2022/23 budget, increasing the total to 18. The increase cost $1.1 million and was paid for by general fund reserves.
