The Race for Seat #3

Apopka City Commission Special Election for Seat #3 moved to August 23rd

The Special Election for Seat #3 on the Apopka City Council just got a lot closer.

According to Orange County Supervisor of Elections Bill Cowles, and Apopka City Clerk Susan Bone, the general election for Seat #3 is on August 23rd - in accordance with statewide primary elections. If there is a runoff in the election, it will be on November 8th, in accordance with the statewide general election day.

Previously, November 8th was the projected general election date for Seat #3, with a runoff (if necessary) in December.

The qualifying period will begin at noon on Monday, June 13th, and end at noon on Friday, June 17th.

Doug Bankson, who is the sitting Seat #3 commissioner on the Apopka City Commission, turned in his letter of resignation, but will not vacate the seat until after the election on November 8th, according to Bone. Bankson is vacating in order to run in the Florida State House District 39 election.

There are currently three candidates who have announced their intention to run for the seat - Wes Dumey, Lynetta Johnson, and Eric Mock.

Both Dumey and Mock ran in the March 8th City Commission elections - Dumey losing to Commissioner Diane Velazquez for Seat #2, and Mock losing to Commissioner Nick Nesta for Seat #4. This is Johnson's first run for office in Apopka.

Dumey is the founder of a small business in Apopka that provides software consulting and solution services for several Fortune 500 businesses. He has a master's degree in economics.

Johnson is the Director of Operations for Prime Electrical Services. She served in the US Air Force from 1990 to 2000. In 2012, she was the Senior Contract Administrator for Moog Inc., where she managed the revolutionary aircraft, Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Mock is a real estate agent at You Have Realty, and president of the Vistas on Water's Edge Homeowners Association. He was an executive director of nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Florida. He managed and oversaw the operation of facilities with budgets between $7-20 million and a staff of over 380 employees.
