With respect, why didn't Chief Carnesale and/or District Chief Bengston retire this trailer and ask the City for funds to replace it? They both state it was unsafe, one of them even "mothballed" it. I don't think the Mayor is attempting to lay blame on these guys. I think he's asking a good question. If this trailer was deemed universally unsafe, why was it still being used? And why was an inexperienced fireman sent to move it? The details count, at EVERY level. Direct supervisors, middle supervisors, union safety rules and regulations. Let's keep going. We are starting to see details emerge. I would like to see the maintenance records for this vehicle. I'm assuming that, like when I was in the military, vehicles were regularly checked by those using them and responsible for them for serviceability. Who signed the record saying this vehicle was serviceable? I did note Chief Bengston said he had seen the trailer tip. It sounds to me that IF the trailer was serviceable, but it was known to have a tip potential, firefighters handling it would need specific training in order to do so. Who manages this? And again, what are the union rules for a firefighter when he thinks he's being put into a precarious position like this? I know the state investigated this, where can we see the results of that investigation? I would think if the Chief were responsible the state would have gone right to him. Again, before anyone gets all angry with me, I'm looking for answers. THEN I'll consider taking a side. It is good to see more details emerging.
