I listened to the Apopka City Council meeting last night, but sometimes I miss parts on the video. I missed the mayor's report somehow, but was reading Apopka Critic awhile ago, where the mayor is going lease out the old former carrot house on Lust Road to a church non-profit to store items, for hurricane relief efforts. I read where the building later housed the Clacker manufacturing. I remember those clackers! They were a really hot fad! They were two big ole' glass balls attached with cord between them, and you held them in your hand, and bounced them back and forth and popped them together, and it made a loud clacking sound. They were really popular at Apopka Memorial High School in the early 70's. I loved mine, but those things caused me buises so bad, I was black and blue on my wrists! In the 70's, there was people who sold those clackers by the huge box fulls, without the cords. There were boxes so big, like pumpkins or watermelons are shipped in. They came and sold them over at the Pine Hills Drive-In Flea Market, on the weekends, where I sold plants there. They had sooooo many, in different colors! I think some people bought loads of them to use as a decorative ground cover in their landscaping, which wasn't such a great idea, as neighborhood kids would throw them, and bust windows, and use them as weapons! Anyway, I know where a whole lot of them ended up .....when my husband's crew was installing water and sewer lines down Binion Road, between Lust and Boy Scout Road, on the east side, when the heavy equipment dug down, it was all clackers instead of dirt! They laid the lines in clackers!!! LOL
