UF/IFAS announces its August schedules of classes for Apopka and Orange County

UF/IFAS Extension meets in the middle of summer with a strong menu of classes and programs for Apopka and Orange County residents in August. 

ENGLISH First Time Homebuyer Workshop - 8/4 & 8/5 (Online)

Learn the steps to home ownership and how to obtain an affordable mortgage in this 2-part online class offered via Zoom by a team of UF/IFAS Extension Agents, including Orange County Extension Agent Jenny Rodriguez. This homebuyer workshop meets the education requirements for down payment assistance programs.

Beekeeping 101 – Is Beekeeping for Me? (Online)

Come learn if beekeeping is for you! In this very beginner class presented via Zoom by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough, you'll learn about the important agricultural role honey bees play, how much it costs to get started, and the legality of keeping bees in your area. Youth Nature Walk – Greenwood Urban Wetlands (In Person)

Come join us for a free Youth Nature Walk at Greenwood Urban Wetlands! Presented by Calvin Gardner, Orange County Extension Agent, the focus of this event will be on observing natural environments to educate and inspire curiosity in our local plants and animals. Walks will be led by one to two extension agents, several master gardener volunteers, and at least one parent or legal guardian per party.

Bat House Building Workshop (Online)

This class will go over a brief review of the bats of Florida and how to build a bat house that will hopefully attract bats in your area. Presented by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough.

Soil Building Strategies (In Person)

Learn basic and advanced methods of composting, growing plants for composting, and amendments to add to boost soil fertility in this in-person class taught by Tia Silvasy, Orange County Extension Agent. Class participants will receive a small sample of compost and get to touch and feel other amendments.

Backyard Chicken Class (Online)

Preparing Your Garden for the Cool Season (Online)  

Learn ways to prepare in-ground, raised bed, and container gardens for cool-season gardening. This webinar, presented by Orange County Extension Agent Calvin Gardner, will cover constructing gardening beds, testing and amending soil, types of irrigation, integrated pest management, and starting transplants. This webinar is designed to help gardeners get a successful start to their cool-season gardens.
