Open Door Ministries offering free tutoring and breast cancer supplies

Posted

If you are a 3rd-5th grader that fell behind in math or reading, the Tutoring Center in Apopka may be able to help. It's under the guidance of retired educators and the assistance of Apopka High School Beta Club members. The Orange County Public School system has provided electronic links to the same programs the students would access in class to ensure relevant and consistent subject matter. Several current students have made exciting learning gains from the extra instruction and practice at the Tutoring Center this past school year.

Tutoring will be available for the 2022-23 school year after Labor Day.

Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:00. Jayne and Otis Carter are the program directors and will be happy to reserve a place for your student at The Tutoring Center by calling 321-209-8400 in advance. Transportation is not provided, but a light snack is.

The Breast Cancer Supply Center is also housed at the Open Door Ministries. The center provides the things that those diagnosed with breast cancer may need. There is no charge for supplies, including wigs, bras, and prostheses.

The director, Arlina Faircloth, is a 10-year cancer survivor and has a desire to serve those in need.

“These supplies are so very expensive, and we are happy to assist everyone, especially those who do not have insurance. “, Faircloth said.

Those in need of supplies can make an appointment to visit the center by calling 321-209-8400.

The First Baptist Church of Apopka purchased the building at 229 East 5th Street in 2021, and it is now the home of The Open Door Ministries. We are seeking donations for the restoration and beautification of the house and hoping to acquire matching funds from the City of Apopka.

The Tutoring Center uses donations to purchase books, computers, and student supplies. To donate, please go to fbcapopka.net, select the give button, then check The Open Door.

Also acquired in 2021 is the brick building beside The Open Door Ministries at 235 East 5th Street, which is now called the 5th Street Commerce Center. It is a collection of nine office spaces, many occupied by non-profits. There is also a small meeting room in the building.

The Tutoring Center is part of The Open Door Ministries, an outreach of the First Baptist Church of Apopka. For more details about meeting space, The Breast Cancer Supply Center or the Tutoring Center, call 321-209-8400 or email theopendoor99@yahoo.com.
