Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Awards Grant to Apopka Fire Department

A grant from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation will better prepare the Apopka Fire Department to rescue victims of automobile accidents.

Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation awarded Apopka firefighters with $4,401 to purchase special extrication equipment used in vehicle emergencies. The grant will go before the Apopka City Council for approval at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3.

“We are tremendously grateful to Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation,” said Apopka Fire Chief Chuck Carnesale. “This grant will provide important equipment to help save lives during challenging vehicle rescues.”

The non-profit Public Safety Foundation has provided $20 million in support to more than 1,400 public safety organizations. The Foundation was founded in 2005 by Firehouse Subs co-founders Chris and Robin Sorensen following Hurricane Katrina.

The Apopka Fire Department is utilizing funding to purchase vehicle extrication struts, which support thousands of pounds of weight from lifted vehicles and failing structures. The department also is purchasing new cribbing devices that are used to support vehicles and heavy objects.
