CFX Helps Apopka Grow While Protecting the Environment

The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX), was created in 2014 by the Florida Legislature to replace the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA).

County Commissioner Bryan Nelson sponsored the legislation to create the CFX while he served as Apopka’s State Representative in Tallahassee.

CFX is a regional expressway system that maintains 109-miles of expressways throughout Lake, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties. This expressway system includes 6 different expressways, 61 interchanges, 295 bridges, and 14 mainline toll plazas.

CFX supports the economic needs of Central Florida and providing great transportation choices.

E-PASS

CFX provides free E-Passes to Central Florida residents. An E-PASS is a sticker transponder that is used to pay for tolls. The E-PASS allows drivers to stay on the expressway instead of stopping at toll plazas, and it can even be used to pay for parking at the Orlando International Airport.

CFX Governance

CFX is governed by a board of nine. The Mayors of Orange County and Orlando serve on the CFX Board along with, a member of the Orange County Board of County Commissioners (Commissioner Scott Boyd of District 1), three members appointed by the Governor, and members appointed by the chair of county commissions from Lake, Osceola, and Seminole counties. The Executive Director sits on the board as a non-voting advisor. This board ensures that decisions about Central Florida’s expressways express the best interests of all residents affected by the expressways.

CFX works in close partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). These two organizations will often work together on developments and projects, like the Wekiva Parkway. The two organizations have split the work on the project, with CFX completing certain sections, and FDOT completing certain sections.

Wekiva Parkway

The Wekiva Parkway (SR429), is a 25-mile long toll road which upon its completion in 2021 will complete the express beltway around Orlando. Bryan Nelson provided this prediction; “I anticipate the day when Central Florida’s beltway is complete. This will make our daily commute much easier.”

According to the CFX Projected Fiscal Year End Capital Project Expenditures Report, more than $120 million will be spent by June 2016 alone one this project.

The Wekiva Parkway will help residents of Central Florida get around more efficiently, as well as relieve traffic congestion on roads that already exist like US 441 and SR 46. The Wekiva Parkway is also working to help protect the natural resources surrounding the Wekiva River. Of the $1.6 billion project, $500 million of the budget will be used for non-toll road improvements. including more than 3,400 acres of land that is being set aside for conservation.

Additionally, the project is working to protect wildlife by building the parkway to be elevated in order to reduce accidents which involve wildlife. Wildlife bridges will also be built to help protect wildlife. Eco-tourism is an important part of Central Florida and the Apopka area, and CFX and the Wekiva Parkway project are ensuring that our land and wildlife remain protected throughout this exciting expansion.
