Posted

Friday night was kind to both Apopka football teams with the Apopka Blue Darters and Wekiva Mustangs winning their contests. Apopka rallied to defeat Lake Brantley 20-13, while Wekiva routed Horizon 34-7.

Apopka 20, Lake Brantley 13

It was a familiar theme last Friday night for the Apopka Blue Darters.

Fall behind. Rally. Win.

Despite costly turnovers, and a 13-0 deficit, Apopka defeated the Lake Brantley Patriots 20-13 for its third come-from-behind victory of the season. The win improved the Blue Darter's record to 4-2. It also gave them a 1-0 record in 4M District 2.

Senior running back Zeldrick Roberts rushed for three touchdowns for the Blue Darters to fuel the rally.

Lake Brantley fell to 4-3 on the season, and 1-2 in the district.

It was the sixth straight victory for Apopka over Lake Brantley dating back to 2012.

Next Friday, the Blue Darters hit the road to face the Lake Mary Rams, who are 5-1 on the season, and 1-1 in the district.  Lake Mary shutout the Evans Trajans 26-0 last Friday.

Wekiva 34, Horizon 7

Everything seemed to come together for the Wekiva Mustangs Friday night as they cruised past the Horizon Hawks 34-7. The Mustangs took a 21-0 halftime lead, and never looked back.

The win evened Wekiva's record to 4-4 on the season and 1-1 in 3M District 3.

The Mustangs were led by its junior quarterback Tyrae Davis, who threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns. Davis also ran for 57 yards on three carries, one for a score. Senior running back Terrell Weathers led all rushers with 166 yards on nine carries. Wekiva amassed 556 total yards in the game.

On defense, Wekiva held the previously unbeaten Hawks to just seven points, but also recorded two sacks, recovered two fumbles, intercepted a pass, and on special teams blocked a Horizon punt.

The Mustangs return home this Friday night to host the Jones Tigers in a 3M District 3 clash. The Trojans are 5-2 on the year and 0-1 in district play. Kickoff is at 7pm.
