Blue Darters bounce back in a big way

Posted

Monday Morning Quarterback: Apopka 38, Dr. Phillips 7

The best remedy for a tough loss is a bounce-back victory, and the Apopka Blue Darters accomplished that last Friday night in a big way.

In its third straight game against a team that played in a state championship game in 2018, the Blue Darters thrashed the Dr. Phillips Panthers 38-7 after a 37-20 loss to the Lakeland Dreadnaughts the previous week. The win gives Apopka a 3-1 record and may return them to the Associated Press State 8-A top 10 rankings after falling out last week. It is also the fourth straight victory over Dr. Phillips, although the three previous games were decided on the last drive of the game.

This one was decidedly different.

Junior quarterback Jackson Darlington threw for three touchdowns for the Blue Darters, and junior running back Akeem Brown ran for two more as Apopka took a 14-0 halftime lead and then ran off 24 unanswered points in the second half to cruise to victory.

The Apopka offense got back on track, rushing for 197 yards and passing for 104, while the defense only allowed one score and forced five turnovers.

Senior running back Cornelius Williams led all rushers with 107 yards for the Blue Darters and caught a 4-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

The Blue Darters return to action this Friday night at Boone High School in Orlando to face the Boone Braves, 2-1 on the season including a 21-20 victory over Ocoee in its last game. Apopka defeated Ocoee 47-0 in its season opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 PM. Admission is $6.

The Wekiva Mustangs, currently 3-0 and ranked first in the state poll, return to action this Friday against the Olympia Titans, who are 1-3 on the season. The game is at Wekiva High School and kickoff is scheduled for 7 PM. Admission is $6. The Mustangs did not play this past Friday.
