A Day Without Immigrants demonstration coming to Orange County

Posted
The Florida Farmworkers Association released the following statement about the "Day without Immigrants" demonstration:

"Immigrants leave their homes and families behind to escape economic, environmental, and social turmoil for reasons beyond their control, often the result of policies developed by wealthier nations. We support immigrants who by their sweat and toil ensure we have food on our shelves and on our plates, who build skyscrapers and homes, and who also start their own business and enter professional fields.

Our country, since its inception, has relied on immigrant labor. Immigrants do some of the hardest, least appreciated work to have a chance at a better life for their families.  Today and every day, we stand in solidarity and unity for the dignity and respect of this nation’s diverse immigrant community."

In cities around America, thousands of construction companies, restaurants, and other businesses are bracing for "A Day Without Immigrants," a combination boycott/strike that highlights the contributions of immigrants to U.S. business and culture. Demonstrations are expected around the country including in Orlando, at Lake Eola Park (NE corner, on the corner of Robinson Street and North Eola Drive) from 1-4 pm.

It's a rally in support of dignity and respect for the immigrant community.

A Day Without Immigrants originated in 2017 with a protest and boycott that took place to demonstrate the importance of immigration, to protest building a wall on the US southern border, and to potentially deport millions of undocumented immigrants. The strike called for immigrants not to go to work, to avoid spending money and keep children home from school.

People took part to show the importance of immigrants to the economy and also to protest the possible racial profiling of U.S. citizens by immigration enforcement. The strike was planned on social media. People first started talking about the strike after the Women's March, and as the idea gained momentum, the restaurant industry helped boost exposure.
