I am reading the Apopka Voice article here about the annexation of South Apopka. Ms. Francina Boykin talks of burning trash behind her property because they did not have trash service in South Apopka. I was raised in rural S.C. and my family also burned their garbage at in the backyard, in our case, at the edge of the woods. I will never the day my father was gone and my mother was burning the garbage, and went back into the house and was working in the kitchen, and I was young, and kept telling my mother that the fire was going into the woods, and she kept saying that I"ll be in a minute. LoL. Well, long story short, when I finally convinced her to go and look, the woods were on fire, big time, and she grabbed the broom, and was pounding at the flames, and the as red in the face, saying " What am I going to do?". I said, "Call the fire department!". We had a volunteer fire department. This is a true story. I think the fact that Francina not having trash service was more the era we lived in. My husband was raised here in Apopka, in the county on Welch Road, and his family did not that service either.
